Tick fever symptoms in dogs: what to know

Tick-borne illness in dogs may cause fever, tiredness, reduced appetite, pale gums, joint pain, or bleeding, and needs veterinary assessment. Signs can be mild at first or appear after a delay, so tell the veterinarian about any tick exposure, travel, outdoor activity, or recent change in behaviour.

A sick dog may sleep more, move stiffly, avoid food, or seem less interested in play. Some dogs develop swollen joints, vomiting, diarrhoea, coughing, breathing changes, bruising, nosebleeds, or dark urine. These signs are not specific to tick disease; other infections, toxins, immune problems, and internal disorders can look similar. A veterinarian may need an examination and blood tests to assess blood cells, organs, and hydration.

Arrange veterinary advice as soon as you notice a combination of fever, lethargy, appetite loss, or unusual bleeding. Keep your dog quiet, offer fresh water, and prevent strenuous exercise. Do not give human painkillers or leftover antibiotics unless a veterinarian specifically prescribes them. If you find a tick, use suitable removal equipment or ask the clinic to help; avoid crushing it with bare fingers. Keep a note of when signs began and bring any medicine or parasite-prevention details.

Seek emergency veterinary care for collapse, difficulty breathing, repeated vomiting, seizures, severe weakness, uncontrolled bleeding, very pale or yellow gums, or inability to drink. Same-day assessment is sensible when a dog is feverish, stops eating, becomes unusually quiet, develops limping, or has bruises or nosebleeds. A dog that worsens quickly should not be monitored at home while waiting for symptoms to settle.
