Tick fever rash: what to know

A fever with a rash can reflect an infection, a skin reaction, or another inflammatory problem, so the pattern and accompanying symptoms matter. A rash may be flat, raised, itchy, painful, blistered, or bruise-like. Fever can occur with conditions such as chickenpox, cellulitis, or other infections, but the rash alone cannot identify the cause.

Note when the fever began, whether the rash appeared before or after it, and whether it is spreading. Also look for sore throat, cough, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache, joint pain, swollen glands, or pain in one area of skin. Recent medicines, travel, insect bites, new foods, and contact with someone unwell can help a clinician narrow the possibilities. Do not assume that every fever and rash is contagious, but avoid close contact with vulnerable people until you have advice if an infection is possible.

Rest, drink regularly, and wear light clothing if you feel overheated. Keep the skin clean and avoid scratching; short nails can reduce skin damage. Do not share towels, cups, or bedding while the cause is unclear. Take photographs if the rash changes quickly, and record any medicines or products used on the skin. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a fever medicine is suitable for you, taking your age, pregnancy status, medical conditions, and other medicines into account.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, confusion, fainting, a severe headache with neck stiffness, repeated vomiting, a rapidly worsening illness, or a rash that looks like bleeding under the skin and does not fade when pressed. Get prompt advice for a very young baby with fever, a person with a weakened immune system, or a painful, hot, rapidly expanding area of redness. Arrange medical review when fever persists, the rash spreads, or you cannot keep fluids down.
