What should you know about tick bite fever symptoms?

After a tick bite, note fever or chills, headache, unusual tiredness, aching muscles or joints, swollen glands, nausea, and any new rash. Some illnesses cause a mark or sore at the bite site, while others cause a more widespread rash; the absence of a rash does not rule out infection. Acute bronchitis, bronchiolitis, a common cold, COVID-19, chickenpox, croup, or cellulitis can produce overlapping symptoms. A symptom list cannot identify the cause on its own.

Contact a clinician when fever or a new illness follows a tick bite, and explain the timing, location, travel, outdoor exposure, and whether the tick was attached. Take a photograph of any rash and note whether it is spreading, painful, or itchy. Rest and drink fluids if able. Avoid taking leftover antibiotics because the correct treatment depends on the suspected infection and examination.

Seek emergency care for confusion, a stiff neck, severe headache, fainting, difficulty breathing, repeated vomiting, severe weakness, or a rapidly spreading rash. Get prompt review for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pain, or discharge at the bite site. A clinician may decide whether blood tests, other investigations, or treatment are needed based on symptoms and exposure.

Ask which symptoms are most concerning in your situation, how often to check your temperature, whether the rash needs a photograph or review, and what changes should trigger emergency care. Tell them about pregnancy, immune problems, allergies, and regular medicines.
