How is thyroid cancer treated?

The care team considers the thyroid cancer type, tumour size, position, lymph nodes and any spread outside the thyroid. Some small or low-risk findings can be monitored with planned examinations and imaging. Other cancers need treatment to remove thyroid tissue or to address disease that remains or has spread.

Thyroid removal surgery may remove part or all of the gland. Radioactive iodine can be used for selected thyroid cancers after surgery or when thyroid tissue needs targeted treatment. Targeted therapy may be considered for particular advanced or treatment-resistant cancers. A treatment plan can combine approaches and may be adjusted as results become available.

Ask for the exact cancer type, the purpose of each proposed treatment and what alternatives are reasonable. Clarify whether surgery would remove part or all of the thyroid and whether thyroid hormone replacement would be needed afterward. Ask how treatment could affect voice, calcium balance, swallowing, work and daily activities.

Bring imaging and pathology reports, a medicine list and questions about fertility, pregnancy or breastfeeding where relevant. Planned follow-up can include examination, blood tests and imaging. Keep copies of your treatment summary so future clinicians can understand the decisions already made.

During or after treatment, seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow fluids, rapidly increasing neck swelling or severe weakness. Contact the care team promptly for new voice changes, tingling or muscle cramps, fever, or symptoms that worsen after a procedure or treatment. Use the emergency plan provided by your team if one is available.
