What should you know about thyroid cancer in dogs?

A firm swelling in a dog's neck can have several causes. A veterinarian examines its position, mobility, growth, and effect on swallowing or breathing, then may recommend blood tests, ultrasound, chest imaging, needle sampling, or a biopsy. These findings help distinguish a thyroid tumour from enlarged lymph nodes or another neck problem. A diagnosis also considers whether the mass is affecting nearby structures or has spread.

Dogs may show coughing, noisy breathing, reduced appetite, weight change, or difficulty swallowing, but these signs are not specific. Hoarseness or a changed bark should be reported because a neck mass can affect structures involved in the voice. Your veterinarian will explain what each test can and cannot show.

Arrange a veterinary appointment rather than squeezing or repeatedly touching the swelling.
