What should you know about thymoma gland?

The thymus is part of the immune system and sits in the central chest. It is more active during childhood, but thymic tissue remains in adults. A thymoma may be found during imaging for another reason or after symptoms such as chest discomfort, cough, breathlessness, or difficulty swallowing. Some people have no symptoms.

Doctors assess the tumour’s position, size, relationship to nearby structures, and whether it has extended beyond the thymus. Blood tests may also be used when symptoms suggest an associated immune condition, including muscle weakness or drooping eyelids.

Arrange review with a specialist team familiar with tumours of the chest. Evaluation may include a chest scan, examination, blood tests, and sometimes a tissue sample. The safest biopsy approach depends on the tumour’s location and whether surgery is already planned.

Treatment is individualised. Surgery may remove the thymoma and nearby thymic tissue when complete removal is appropriate. Radiotherapy may be discussed after surgery or when surgery cannot remove all visible disease. Keep copies of scan reports and pathology results, and ask which symptoms should be reported during follow-up.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, bluish lips, fainting, new confusion, or chest pressure that does not settle. Contact your clinical team promptly for increasing trouble swallowing, new facial or neck swelling, coughing blood, or rapidly worsening weakness.

Ask where the thymoma is located, whether nearby structures are involved, what tests are still needed, and whether a biopsy is advisable. You can also ask how surgery and radiotherapy fit into the plan, what recovery may involve, and how follow-up scans will be arranged.
