What should you know about thumb tip pain and swelling?

A bruised fingertip may throb and swell after impact, while pressure beneath the nail can make even light contact painful. A cut beside the nail can allow infection to develop, particularly when redness, warmth, pus or worsening tenderness appears. A small fracture is possible after a crush or heavy blow, even if the nail is intact. Pain farther back toward the thumb-side wrist has a different pattern and can occur with De Quervain's Tenosynovitis. These symptoms need examination when the cause is uncertain.

Remove rings or tight items before swelling increases. Rest the hand, raise it, and use a wrapped cool pack for short periods. Keep any cut clean and covered; do not pierce the nail, squeeze a swollen area or apply harsh chemicals. Avoid heavy gripping until pain settles. If the thumb tip was crushed, note whether you can bend and straighten it and whether sensation remains normal. A clinician can check the nail bed, bone, circulation and sensation and decide if imaging or wound care is needed.

Seek urgent care for an open or deep wound, a thumb that is crooked, severe throbbing after a crush, loss of feeling, inability to move the tip, or a pale, blue or cold thumb. Prompt assessment is needed when redness or warmth spreads, pus appears, fever develops or pain worsens. A puncture, bite or dirty wound also deserves medical advice. Do not wait for swelling to resolve if the nail is lifted or the fingertip looks misshapen.

Ask whether the nail bed or bone may be injured, how to dress a wound, and whether the thumb should be protected. Ask which signs suggest infection and when you can safely resume gripping or manual work.
