Thumb pain shooting up the arm: what to know

Short answer
Thumb pain shooting up the arm can reflect irritation in the thumb or wrist, but travelling pain, tingling, or weakness may also involve a nerve and deserves careful assessment if it persists.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Pay attention to
- Burning, tingling, altered feeling, or weakness
- Temporarily avoid
- Forceful gripping and prolonged wrist bending
- Urgent sign
- Sudden weakness or a cold, pale, or blue hand
How pain can travel
Tendon or joint irritation near the thumb may spread discomfort into the wrist and forearm, particularly after gripping or lifting. Nerve irritation can produce burning, electric, or shooting pain, with pins and needles or altered sensation. Neck or upper-arm problems can sometimes be felt farther down the limb. De Quervain's Tenosynovitis is a possible cause of thumb-side wrist pain, but pain travelling up the arm does not establish that diagnosis.
What you can do today
Stop the activity that sends pain up the arm and keep loads light. Avoid forceful gripping, prolonged wrist bending, and leaning on the elbow or wrist. Change position regularly and support the forearm during rest. Gentle movement is reasonable if it does not increase shooting pain, tingling, or weakness; do not repeatedly provoke symptoms to check them. Arrange a clinical review if the pattern continues, because an examination can compare thumb, wrist, neck, and nerve function.
When it is urgent
Seek urgent help for sudden or worsening weakness, loss of feeling, difficulty using the hand, or a hand that becomes cold, pale, or blue. Emergency assessment is needed with arm pain plus chest pressure, breathlessness, faintness, or sweating. After an injury, prompt care is needed for deformity, severe swelling, or inability to move the thumb or wrist.
Questions to bring
Does the pain pattern suggest a tendon, joint, neck, or nerve problem? Which symptoms would mean I should seek urgent help? Should I change my workstation, sleep position, or lifting technique while this is assessed?

Questions people ask
Does shooting pain always mean a trapped nerve?
No. Irritation in a tendon or joint can spread discomfort, while nerve symptoms are more suggestive when pain accompanies tingling, altered sensation, or weakness.
Should I stretch the arm?
Avoid stretches that reproduce electric or shooting pain. Gentle comfortable movement is safer until a clinician identifies the source.
