Throat irritation due to acidity: what to know

Short answer
Throat irritation due to acidity can happen when stomach contents move upwards and irritate the throat, especially after meals or when lying down.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the irritation may mean
Reflux may cause a scratchy, burning, dry or lump-like feeling in the throat. You might also notice a sour taste, frequent throat clearing, cough, or a change in your voice. Symptoms can occur without obvious chest burning. Eating a large meal, bending soon after eating, or lying down can make upward flow more noticeable.
Throat irritation has other possible explanations, including a viral infection, nasal drainage or an allergy. Allergic Rhinitis and Common Cold can both cause throat symptoms, while Food Allergy needs urgent attention if swelling or breathing trouble follows a food.
What you can do
Notice whether symptoms follow particular meals, late eating, alcohol, caffeine, spicy foods or lying down. Try smaller meals, remain upright after eating, and raise the upper part of the bed if symptoms disturb sleep. Sip water and avoid repeated forceful throat clearing, which can further irritate the tissues.
A pharmacist or clinician can explain whether an antacid or another acid-reducing treatment is suitable for you, taking your other medicines and health conditions into account. Do not start prolonged treatment for recurring throat symptoms without an assessment.
When to seek care
Arrange a medical review if irritation keeps returning, affects sleep, causes persistent hoarseness, or does not settle with simple measures. Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling of the lips or tongue, vomiting blood, black stools, or severe chest pain.
Questions for your doctor
Could reflux explain my throat symptoms, or should we check for nasal allergy or infection? Which medicines are appropriate with my current treatments? What changes should I make if symptoms continue despite treatment?
