Venous thoracic outlet syndrome

Veins carry blood back from the arm toward the chest. Narrowing at the thoracic outlet can make drainage harder, particularly when the arm is raised or repeatedly used. The arm may feel tight or heavy, and the hand or upper chest may appear swollen, bluish, or more prominent in its surface veins. Symptoms can be subtle or develop after strenuous activity. These features can also occur with a clot, injury, infection, or another circulation problem, so the label cannot be confirmed from appearance alone.

Arrange prompt medical review for new one-sided arm swelling, aching, heaviness, or colour change. Keep track of onset and triggers, remove constricting jewellery or clothing, and avoid strenuous upper-body activity until advised. A clinician may assess pulses and blood flow and choose imaging if needed. Treatment depends on the findings; Physiotherapy or Postural Correction Therapy may help selected mechanical problems, but they are not substitutes for urgent circulation assessment. Seek emergency care for rapidly increasing swelling, severe arm pain, a blue or cold hand, sudden weakness, chest pain, breathlessness, fainting, or coughing blood. These symptoms may indicate an acute vascular or lung problem. Do not wait for a routine physiotherapy appointment when they occur.
