Short answer

To help a runny nose, use saline, avoid known irritants, drink fluids and consider the pattern of symptoms before choosing treatment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Gentle relief
Saline and careful nose blowing can reduce irritation.
Check the pattern
Itching and sneezing suggest a different cause from fever and body aches.

Why your nose may run

A runny nose happens when the nasal lining produces extra fluid. A cold, influenza or COVID-19 may cause drainage alongside sore throat, cough, fever or tiredness. Clear fluid with sneezing and itchy eyes can fit allergic rhinitis, including reactions to house dust mites or pets. Facial pressure, blocked breathing and thick mucus may occur with sinusitis. A runny nose alone cannot identify its cause.

Ways to ease it

Gently blow your nose and use a saline spray or rinse with water prepared according to the product instructions. Drink enough fluid to avoid a dry mouth, rest, and use a clean humidifier if dry air irritates you. Wash hands and avoid sharing towels when an infection is possible. Reduce exposure to smoke, strong scents, dust and a known allergy trigger. A pharmacist can explain whether an antihistamine or nasal treatment is suitable; follow the label and ask before giving medicines to a child.

When to seek care

Seek medical advice for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, dehydration, severe facial pain, confusion, or a high or persistent fever. Arrange review when symptoms keep returning, last longer than expected, become one-sided with bleeding, or interfere with sleep. Testing may be advised when infection is suspected, especially after relevant exposure.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the pattern suggests allergy or infection, which nasal products are appropriate, and how to reduce exposure to a suspected trigger.

Questions people ask

Is a runny nose always a cold?

No. Allergies, irritants, influenza, COVID-19 and sinus problems can also cause nasal drainage.

Can I use a decongestant nasal spray for a long time?

Use these products only as directed, because prolonged use can worsen congestion. Ask a pharmacist about a safer option for your symptoms.
