Things that help heartburn during pregnancy

Short answer
During pregnancy, smaller meals, upright posture, avoiding personal triggers, and pregnancy-safe treatment can ease heartburn.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Helpful habit
- Stay upright after meals and avoid personal triggers.
- Medication check
- Confirm pregnancy suitability before using a treatment.
Why pregnancy can trigger it
Hormonal changes can relax the valve between the stomach and food pipe, while the growing uterus can increase pressure on the stomach. Acid may then move upward, causing burning behind the breastbone, a sour taste, or discomfort after eating. Pregnancy-related heartburn is not the same as a diagnosis of [Acid Reflux](/conditions/acid-reflux/), although the symptoms can overlap.
Symptoms may be worse after a large meal, when lying down, or after foods that you personally find irritating. Other causes of upper-abdominal discomfort include [Gastritis](/conditions/gastritis/), [Hiatus Hernia](/conditions/hiatus-hernia/), and [Peptic Ulcer](/conditions/peptic-ulcer/).
Ways to settle the burning
Try smaller meals spread through the day, eat slowly, and remain upright after eating. Avoid lying down soon after food; raising the upper body during sleep may help. Reduce triggers such as rich or spicy meals, citrus, chocolate, caffeine, or fizzy drinks only if they worsen your symptoms. Wear comfortable clothing around the abdomen and keep a note of meals and symptoms.
Ask your obstetric or primary-care clinician before taking an antacid, herbal product, or acid reducer. They can check interactions and pregnancy suitability; if needed, discuss [Acid Reflux Medication](/treatments/medical-management/acid-reflux-medication/). Do not use another person’s prescription.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for chest pain with breathlessness, faintness, sweating, or pain spreading to the arm or jaw. Contact your maternity team promptly for severe or persistent upper-abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, trouble swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, or symptoms with severe headache or visual changes. Arrange review if heartburn prevents eating, drinking, or sleeping despite self-care.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which foods or medicines may be aggravating symptoms, which relief products are suitable at your stage of pregnancy, how to take them, and whether your symptoms need another explanation. Mention all vitamins, supplements, and existing conditions.

Questions people ask
Can I take heartburn medicine while pregnant?
Some treatments may be suitable, but the choice depends on your pregnancy, other medicines, and symptoms. Check with a clinician or pharmacist first.
Why is heartburn worse at night?
Lying down removes gravity’s help and stomach pressure may increase after evening meals. Earlier, smaller meals and an elevated upper body can help.
