What should you know about thickened nail bed treatment?

A thick nail may be yellow, crumbly, ridged, lifted, or difficult to trim. Nail fungus can alter the nail plate and the material beneath it. Nail psoriasis may cause pits, separation, or a yellow-brown patch. Repeated shoe pressure or an old injury can change growth from the nail root. Several causes can coexist, and a nail can remain visibly altered while healthy growth slowly replaces the damaged portion.

A clinician can inspect the nail and may test clippings before prescribing an antifungal. Confirmed fungus may be treated with a topical medicine, an oral antifungal, or another approach selected for the nail and your health history. Laser treatment is offered in some settings, but suitability and expected benefit vary. Keep nails trimmed straight across, wear roomy shoes, and keep feet dry. Do not share nail tools or apply repeated cosmetic coverings while the cause is unclear.

Seek assessment if the thickening is new, affects one nail without an obvious injury, keeps progressing, or causes pain in shoes. Prompt review is needed for redness, drainage, swelling, bleeding, a dark mark that changes, or skin breakdown around the nail. People with diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced sensation should not self-treat an injured or infected nail.

Ask whether the nail needs testing; which findings support fungus or psoriasis; whether oral treatment is suitable with your medicines and health history; and how nail trimming, footwear, and follow-up should be managed.
