In flow cytometry, cells pass one at a time through a focused stream of fluid. Lasers illuminate the cells, while detectors record light scattered by each cell and signals from attached fluorescent markers. Software groups cells by patterns such as size, internal complexity, and marker expression.

In oncology, the method can help characterise abnormal blood or bone-marrow cells and distinguish cell populations. Thermo Fisher is a technology supplier; the instrument does not interpret a result by itself. A trained laboratory team combines the pattern with the sample type, clinical history, and other tests.

Ask which sample is being analysed, which markers are included, and what question the test is intended to answer. Samples may come from blood, bone marrow, or tissue prepared in a laboratory. Follow the collection instructions you receive and tell the team about medicines or recent treatments that may affect the sample.
