Where to get the tetanus vaccine

A routine vaccination service or primary-care clinic can review your record, discuss planned doses, and provide vaccination when appropriate. An urgent-care service or emergency department is more suitable when a wound is deep, contaminated, badly damaged, or difficult to clean.

Call ahead when possible to check availability and bring your vaccination record. The service may need to assess the wound before deciding whether a booster or additional protection is appropriate. Vaccine location and wound treatment may be separate parts of the visit.

Bring any immunisation record and information about allergies or previous vaccine reactions. After an injury, note when it occurred, what caused it, whether the wound is deep or dirty, and whether an object remains inside.

Until assessed, rinse a minor wound with clean running water and cover it. Do not delay urgent care while searching for records if bleeding is hard to control, tissue is severely damaged, or a foreign object is embedded.

Use prompt medical care for deep punctures, bites, burns, crush injuries, or contaminated wounds. Seek emergency help for jaw tightness, trouble swallowing or breathing, severe stiffness, or repeated muscle spasms, whether or not you know where your next vaccine will be given.

Ask whether the service can review your record and provide the needed dose, whether the injury needs cleaning or other treatment, and where to go if vaccination is unavailable there. Mention pregnancy, immune-system problems, and prior reactions.
