When is the right time for a tetanus vaccine?

Tetanus vaccination can be part of routine immunisation, catch-up care, or wound management. A clinician considers which doses you have already received, how long ago the last dose was, and whether the injury is clean or contaminated. Timing after an injury is therefore individual rather than based only on the calendar.

Clean the wound promptly with clean running water and remove visible debris only when it is easy to do so. Note when the injury occurred and how it happened. Take your vaccine record to a clinic or pharmacy service that offers assessment, and explain if doses were missed, records are unavailable, or you have a condition affecting immunity.

Seek prompt care for deep punctures, bites, burns, crush injuries, wounds containing dirt, or injuries with damaged tissue. Go to emergency care for severe bleeding, breathing difficulty, jaw stiffness, difficulty swallowing, or painful muscle spasms. These concerns require more than arranging a routine vaccination appointment.
