What symptoms can follow a tetanus vaccine?

After vaccination, the arm may feel sore, warm, or swollen. Some people feel tired or unwell for a short time, and a mild fever or headache can occur. These effects reflect the immune system responding to the vaccine and usually settle without special treatment. Keep track of symptoms and follow the advice given by the vaccinator.

Rest if you feel unwell, drink fluids, and move the arm gently if it is comfortable. Ask a pharmacist or clinician which pain or fever medicine is suitable for you, especially if you have another condition or take regular medicines. Do not assume every symptom after an injection is caused by the vaccine; an unrelated illness or the original wound may also need attention.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, fainting, confusion, or rapidly worsening illness after vaccination. Contact a clinician if the injection-site reaction keeps expanding, becomes very painful, produces discharge, or does not begin to improve. Jaw stiffness and repeated muscle spasms are emergency symptoms of possible tetanus, not typical vaccine effects.
