How long does the tetanus vaccine last?

For many adults who completed their recommended vaccination series, a booster is advised about every 10 years. A booster may be advised sooner after certain wounds, especially if the wound is deep, dirty, or contaminated. The exact decision depends on when your last dose was given and whether your earlier doses are documented.

The tetanus vaccine trains the immune system to recognise tetanus toxin. It does not create a lifetime guarantee of protection, and a past dose does not treat tetanus after symptoms begin. Tetanus is caused by toxin-producing bacteria that can enter through broken skin, including puncture wounds, burns, or wounds containing dirt.

A person who has never completed the primary vaccination series may need a catch-up schedule rather than simply waiting for a routine booster. Records can be helpful, but a clinician can also assess what to do when vaccination history is uncertain.

Rinse a wound with clean running water, remove visible dirt only if it comes away easily, and cover it with a clean dressing. Contact a healthcare professional promptly if the wound is deep, heavily contaminated, caused by a bite or puncture, or difficult to clean.

Tell the clinician the date of your last tetanus-containing vaccine and whether you completed the earlier series. For a clean minor wound, a booster may be considered when the last dose was 10 or more years ago; for a dirty or major wound, it may be considered after 5 or more years. If your history is incomplete or unknown, additional vaccination and other preventive treatment may be needed.

Seek urgent medical care for jaw tightness, trouble opening the mouth, painful muscle stiffness or spasms, difficulty swallowing, or breathing problems after an injury. These can be warning signs of tetanus and need immediate assessment; do not wait for a scheduled vaccine appointment.

Get prompt wound assessment even without symptoms if the injury is deep, contains embedded material, involves a burn or crush injury, or occurred in soil or an animal environment and your vaccination status is uncertain.

Ask which tetanus-containing vaccine you received, whether your record shows a completed primary series, and when your next routine booster is due. If you have a wound, ask whether its depth and contamination change the booster timing or mean you need additional preventive treatment.
