What should you know about tetanus vaccine for goats?

Tetanus is caused by a toxin made by bacteria that can enter damaged tissue, including puncture wounds contaminated with soil or animal waste. Goats can be vaccinated by a veterinarian as part of herd health. This does not immunise a person who handles a vaccinated goat, its injection equipment, or its medicines. Human tetanus protection comes from vaccines made for people and from wound assessment when an injury occurs.

Wash broken skin with clean running water and soap, and remove visible dirt without digging into the wound. Do not inject an animal vaccine into yourself or another person. Record when your last human tetanus-containing vaccine was given if you can, and contact a clinic for advice if the wound is deep, dirty, caused by a bite, or difficult to clean. A clinician may recommend a booster or additional protection based on the wound and your vaccination history.

Seek prompt medical care for a deep puncture, crushed tissue, a bite, a wound with embedded material, or increasing redness, swelling, warmth, discharge, or pain. Get urgent help if you develop trouble opening your mouth, painful muscle stiffness, difficulty swallowing, breathing difficulty, or severe spasms. These symptoms need medical assessment and should not be attributed to a goat vaccine or managed at home.
