When tetanus symptoms can appear

The interval depends on factors such as where the wound is, how deeply bacteria were introduced, and how much toxin reaches the nervous system. A short interval can accompany more severe disease, but timing alone cannot predict an individual's course.

Early tetanus often causes stiffness near the jaw or neck, trouble opening the mouth, difficulty swallowing, abdominal rigidity, or painful muscle tightening. Spasms may later be triggered by noise, touch, light, or movement. A wound may be small or already healed by the time symptoms begin.

Clean a fresh wound gently with clean running water and arrange medical advice for a puncture, deep, crushed, or contaminated injury. Tell the clinician when it happened and whether your tetanus vaccinations are complete. Preventive treatment can be considered before symptoms develop.

Do not use the absence of symptoms as proof that a wound is safe. If jaw stiffness, swallowing trouble, or spasms appear, seek urgent assessment immediately.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, repeated spasms, jaw locking, severe stiffness, or rapidly worsening swallowing problems. These symptoms can involve muscles needed for breathing and require urgent monitoring and treatment.

Ask whether the injury needs a booster or other preventive protection, whether any symptoms fit tetanus, and what changes should trigger emergency care. Bring your vaccination record if available and describe the material that caused the wound.
