Tetanus shot after an injury: when to ask

Tetanus bacteria can enter through breaks in the skin, especially punctures, wounds contaminated with soil or debris, burns, crush injuries, or wounds containing dead tissue. A clinician checks how the injury happened, how deeply the skin is broken, when your last tetanus-containing vaccine was given, and whether your primary series is complete. Waiting for symptoms is unsafe because early tetanus may not be obvious.

Wash your hands, then rinse the wound with clean running water and remove visible dirt without digging into the tissue. Apply gentle pressure to bleeding and cover the area with a clean dressing. Go urgently for uncontrolled bleeding, a deep puncture, a bite, a wound from a dirty or rusty object, a severe burn, numbness, loss of movement, or a foreign object embedded in the wound. Also seek help for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, or red streaks. Jaw stiffness, difficulty swallowing, painful muscle tightening, or breathing difficulty requires emergency care.
