Tetanus shot at home: what to know

Tetanus vaccines require the correct product, handling, injection technique and documentation. A clinician also needs to inspect the injury and decide whether your vaccination history matches the wound risk. Household first-aid supplies cannot provide this assessment, and an old or incomplete record may change the recommended plan.

Keep the vaccine in its proper clinical pathway and do not inject a dose obtained for someone else. Rinse the wound with clean running water, wash around it, remove loose surface dirt and apply a clean dressing. Contact a clinic, qualified home-health service or urgent care provider, sharing the wound cause, timing, depth and known vaccine history.

Use urgent medical care for a deep puncture, heavy contamination, a bite, a retained object, uncontrolled bleeding, loss of sensation or difficulty moving the injured area. Increasing redness, swelling, pain, drainage or fever also needs review. Jaw tightness, trouble swallowing, muscle spasms or breathing difficulty are emergencies and are not suitable for home monitoring.
