Tetanus incubation period and symptoms

The incubation period is the time between bacteria entering a wound and the first symptoms. It can vary, so a person may feel well for a while after an injury. Tetanus develops when a bacterial toxin affects the nervous system. Early symptoms can include tightening around the jaw, difficulty opening the mouth, neck stiffness, trouble swallowing, or abdominal rigidity. As the illness progresses, sudden painful muscle spasms may be triggered by sound, touch, light, or movement. The wound may be small or already healed, so its appearance does not rule out tetanus.

Clean cuts and punctures promptly with soap and running water, and remove surface dirt carefully. Arrange medical advice for a deep, dirty, crush, burn, or puncture wound, or if you cannot recall your vaccination history. Describe the injury, the time it occurred, and any previous tetanus doses. Preventive care works before illness is established; do not use the absence of early symptoms as a reason to delay assessment.

Go to an emergency department immediately for jaw locking, repeated muscle spasms, severe stiffness, difficulty swallowing, noisy or difficult breathing, or sudden worsening after a wound. Tetanus can interfere with breathing muscles and requires hospital care. Do not drive yourself if spasms or breathing problems are present; ask someone to help or use emergency transport.
