What should you know about tetanus in dogs?

Tetanus develops when bacteria from the environment enter damaged skin and produce a toxin that interferes with nerves controlling muscles. Dogs may develop stiffness around the wound, a rigid gait, difficulty opening the mouth, raised third eyelids, a fixed facial expression or muscle spasms. The illness may remain localised or become more widespread.

Recovery is influenced by how far the toxin has affected the body, whether breathing and swallowing are impaired, the location and condition of the wound, and the dog’s response to supportive treatment. There is no reliable home method for judging a dog’s prognosis from one sign alone.

Call a veterinarian or emergency animal hospital immediately and describe the wound, the first sign you noticed and any change in walking, swallowing or breathing. Keep the dog quiet, reduce bright light and noise, and handle the affected area gently because stimulation can trigger spasms.

Do not give human medicines, force food or water, or probe a deep wound. A veterinarian may clean the wound, control bacterial growth, reduce muscle spasms, manage pain and provide fluids or breathing support. Treatment can require close monitoring because swallowing and breathing may become difficult.

Seek emergency veterinary care for repeated spasms, a rigid body, jaw stiffness, inability to swallow, choking, blue or pale gums, collapse or laboured breathing. These signs can indicate that muscle control is affecting essential functions.

Arrange prompt assessment for any dog with increasing stiffness after a puncture, bite, dirty wound or surgery, even if the dog is still eating and walking. Keep the dog away from stairs and other hazards during transport, and phone ahead so the team can prepare a calm, low-stimulation space.

Ask whether the signs fit tetanus or another neurological problem, where the wound may be, what monitoring is needed, how swallowing and breathing will be supported, and which changes mean the dog needs emergency escalation. Ask for a home-care plan before discharge and discuss wound prevention and vaccination for other pets.
