What should you know about tetanus during pregnancy?

Tetanus is an infection caused by toxin-producing bacteria entering damaged skin. Pregnancy does not make jaw stiffness or spasms normal, and a wound should not be ignored because it looks small. A clinician reviews the injury, vaccine history, gestational stage, allergies and other health conditions before recommending prevention or treatment. Vaccination decisions are individual, and protecting the pregnant person also supports safe planning for birth and newborn care.

Clean the wound with soap and running water, cover it, and contact your maternity or urgent-care team promptly. Tell them whether the injury was a puncture, bite, burn or wound contaminated with soil, and when your last tetanus vaccine was given. Do not take leftover antibiotics or delay care until the next prenatal visit. If tetanus is diagnosed, treatment is managed in hospital with medicines and monitoring chosen for the parent and pregnancy.

Go to emergency care immediately for jaw tightness, trouble swallowing, painful muscle spasms, unusual stiffness or any breathing difficulty. Also seek prompt care for a deep or dirty wound, uncontrolled bleeding, spreading redness, fever or severe pain. Tell staff that you are pregnant when you arrive.

Ask whether your vaccine history is adequate, whether preventive immunoglobulin is needed, which wound treatments are suitable, and how maternity follow-up will be coordinated.
