What should you know about testicular teratoma metastasis?

A teratoma is a type of germ cell tumour that can contain different tissue types. In adults, a testicular teratoma may be mixed with other germ cell tumour types. Metastasis describes tumour deposits outside the testicle, often assessed in nearby lymph nodes or organs such as the lungs. Imaging and blood tests help map the disease; tumour markers can add useful information, although they do not describe every tumour.

A specialist team reviews examination findings, scans, tumour-marker results and any tissue diagnosis. Treatment may combine removal of the affected testicle, surgery for selected remaining tumour, and medicines that travel through the bloodstream. The plan depends on where the disease is, its tumour type, marker results and how it responds. Ask how treatment may affect fertility, hormone levels and the need for sperm storage before treatment.

Contact the oncology team promptly about new breathing difficulty, chest pain, severe abdominal or back pain, weakness, confusion, or a rapidly worsening headache. During treatment, urgent advice is also needed for fever, uncontrolled vomiting, dehydration or sudden swelling and pain. These symptoms can have several causes, but they may require same-day assessment.
