What should you know about testing for nickel allergy?

Nickel allergy is a delayed contact reaction. Jewellery, watch backs, belt buckles, clothing fasteners, mobile-phone parts, and tools can trigger an itchy, red, scaly, or blistered area where contact occurs. The rash may extend beyond the exact contact point, and symptoms can continue after the item is removed.

During patch testing, small test chambers are placed on the back and left in position as directed by the clinic. The skin is checked at planned visits because the reaction may take time to appear. Irritation and allergy can look similar, so the result must be interpreted alongside your pattern of symptoms and exposures.

Tell the clinic about creams, steroid medicines, recent tanning, active rashes, and medicines that may affect testing. Keep the patches dry and avoid strenuous activity or activities that loosen them, following the clinic’s instructions. Do not apply new products to the test area unless permitted.

After assessment, identify and avoid your triggers. Choose jewellery described as nickel-free by a reliable seller, use a protective barrier where appropriate, and avoid scratching. A clinician may recommend a short course of topical corticosteroids for an active flare; use them only as directed.

Contact the testing clinic if a patch becomes very painful, spreads widely, or develops marked swelling. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, or a rapidly worsening reaction. Arrange a review if the rash continues despite avoiding suspected nickel, because eczema, infection, and other contact allergens can cause similar changes.
