Tension headache with a sore scalp

A tension-type headache may feel like pressure or a tight band, and the scalp can feel sensitive when touched, brushed, or covered by a tight hairstyle. Neck strain, prolonged posture, jaw clenching, stress, and poor sleep can amplify this sensitivity. Check the skin as well: redness, a rash, swelling, sores, or marked pain in one area may point toward a skin or nerve problem rather than simple muscle tension. The symptom pattern matters more than tenderness by itself.

Loosen tight hair coverings, avoid vigorous scalp rubbing, and use a warm compress on the neck or shoulders. Take screen breaks, relax your jaw, and keep your neck in a neutral position. A pharmacist can advise on a suitable over-the-counter pain reliever and check for interactions or reasons to avoid it. Photograph any new rash and note whether touching, brushing, or moving the neck changes the pain.

Seek urgent help for sudden severe headache, weakness, confusion, fainting, seizure, new vision or speech changes, high fever with a stiff neck, or a serious head injury. Arrange a GP review for persistent scalp tenderness, a rash or swelling, hair loss over a painful area, pain that is worsening, or headaches that keep returning.

Ask whether the scalp findings fit muscle tension, skin irritation, or nerve sensitivity, and whether an examination or different treatment would be useful.
