Tension headache on one side of the head: what to know

Short answer
A tension headache can sometimes be felt more on one side, but one-sided head pain also has other possible explanations.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Reading the pattern
Tension-type discomfort is often pressing or tightening and may involve the temple, forehead, scalp, neck, or shoulder on the more affected side. Muscle strain, jaw clenching, posture, and local tenderness can make the sensation feel uneven. One-sided throbbing, worsening with routine activity, nausea, or marked light and sound sensitivity may fit migraine more closely. Eye problems, sinus or dental symptoms, nerve irritation, and other causes can also produce pain on one side, so location alone cannot identify the cause.
Useful next steps
Note which side is affected, how the sensation feels, how quickly it begins, how long it lasts, and whether movement changes it. Check for jaw clenching, neck position, screen use, missed meals, poor sleep, and nasal or dental symptoms. Try a calm break, relaxed shoulders, gentle stretching, regular fluids, and a steady meal pattern. A diary can make a clinical consultation more precise.
Warning signs
Contact a GP if the one-sided pattern is new, recurring, gradually changing, or associated with eye, ear, jaw, dental, or nasal symptoms. Seek urgent help for a sudden severe headache, weakness, numbness, facial droop, speech or vision difficulty, confusion, fainting, fever with stiff neck, repeated vomiting, or symptoms following a head injury.
Questions for your doctor
Does the quality and timing suggest tension, migraine, or a local cause? Should my eyes, jaw, teeth, neck, ears, or medicines be checked, and which warning signs should I act on?

Questions people ask
Can tension headache be on only one side?
It can feel stronger on one side, but a one-sided pattern is not specific, so the pain quality and associated symptoms should be considered.
Is one-sided headache automatically an emergency?
Not automatically, but sudden severe onset or neurological symptoms such as weakness, confusion, or speech or vision change need urgent help.
