Tension headache and nose pressure: what to know

Tight muscles around the forehead, eyes, jaw, and scalp can create pressure that seems to sit at the bridge of the nose. A blocked or irritated nose, allergies, a viral illness, dry air, or an ear problem can produce a similar feeling. Tension-type headache usually feels pressing or tightening rather than strongly throbbing, but symptoms overlap. Notice whether you have a runny or blocked nose, facial tenderness, reduced smell, fever, coloured discharge, tooth pain, or pain that increases when bending forward.

Rest, drink fluids, and use gentle neck and shoulder movement. Reduce screen glare and avoid pressing or rubbing the nose repeatedly. If congestion is present, ask a pharmacist about suitable saline or other treatment, especially if you have long-term conditions or take regular medicines. Keep notes on nasal symptoms and headache timing so a GP can see whether they occur together or separately.

Seek a GP review when pressure lasts beyond a short illness, returns often, affects one side, or comes with persistent blockage, facial swelling, fever, vision changes, or dental pain. Urgent care is needed for a sudden severe headache, swelling around an eye, confusion, weakness, trouble speaking, stiff neck, or repeated vomiting.
