Tension headache in the left temple: what to know

Tension-type headache can be felt on one side, across both temples, or around the forehead. The sensation is commonly dull pressure or tightness and may occur with tenderness in the scalp, neck, or shoulders. Long periods of concentration, teeth grinding, stress, fatigue, or an awkward neck position can make symptoms more noticeable. The location alone cannot identify the cause: migraine, eye strain, sinus symptoms, jaw problems, and other conditions can also cause temple pain.

Pause close-up work and relax your jaw, keeping your teeth apart unless eating. Try a gentle shoulder and neck stretch, maintain regular fluids and meals, and use a comfortable posture. Record whether the pain follows screen use, poor sleep, chewing, or stress, and note any light sensitivity, nausea, tearing, or visual change. If the symptom is recurring, unfamiliar, or not settling, arrange a GP consultation rather than repeatedly self-treating without review.

Get urgent help if temple pain begins suddenly and severely, follows an injury, or comes with weakness, numbness, confusion, difficulty speaking, fainting, seizure, fever and neck stiffness, repeated vomiting, or loss of vision. New severe temple pain with jaw pain while eating or marked scalp tenderness also needs prompt medical assessment. Worsening pain without emergency signs should still be reviewed soon.

Ask what features distinguish tension-type headache from migraine or jaw-related pain, whether your eyes or blood pressure need checking, and which pain-relief plan is suitable for you. Mention all medicines, supplements, and caffeine use.
