Tension headaches and hypertension: what to know

Tension-type headache is usually a pressure-like discomfort involving the head, scalp, neck, or shoulders. Hypertension means blood pressure readings remain higher than the healthy range, and it commonly causes no noticeable symptoms. Pain, anxiety, caffeine, activity, and an incorrectly positioned cuff can temporarily change a reading. A headache can therefore happen alongside a raised reading without proving that hypertension caused it.

If you have access to a validated home monitor, sit quietly with your back supported and your arm relaxed before measuring, then record the reading and how you feel. Follow the device instructions and avoid repeatedly checking in a distressed state. Rest, hydrate, loosen tight clothing, and reduce screen strain while the headache settles.
