Tension headache and numbness: what should you know?

Short answer
Numbness with a tension headache is not something to diagnose at home; sudden or one-sided numbness needs urgent assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical tension symptom
- Pressing pain with muscle tightness
- Record
- Onset time, side affected, spread and associated symptoms
- Emergency sign
- Sudden one-sided numbness or weakness
What it can mean
Tension-type headache usually causes pressing head pain and tightness rather than loss of sensation. Pins and needles can sometimes follow pressure on a limb, rapid breathing during distress, or irritation in the neck, but the cause cannot be confirmed from the symptom alone.
Numbness affecting the face, arm or leg, particularly on one side, may signal a neurological emergency when it begins suddenly or appears with weakness, facial drooping, speech trouble, confusion, severe dizziness or vision change. A migraine aura and other neurological conditions can also cause sensory symptoms, so the timing and pattern matter.
What to do
Note the exact time numbness began, where it is located, whether it is spreading, and whether movement, speech or vision changed. Sit somewhere safe and avoid driving while symptoms continue. If symptoms are mild, brief and clearly linked to a posture, change position gently and arrange medical advice if they recur.
A GP can review the headache pattern, neurological symptoms, medicines and relevant conditions. Do not repeatedly self-treat a new combination of headache and numbness without an assessment.
When to seek care
Call emergency services immediately for sudden numbness, especially on one side, or numbness with weakness, a drooping face, difficulty speaking, collapse, confusion, a new severe headache or trouble walking. Seek prompt medical care for persistent or recurrent numbness, even if it has settled, because the pattern may need examination.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what examination is needed, whether the numbness pattern could come from the neck or another cause, and which recurrence signs should prompt emergency help. Share the onset time, duration, body area and associated symptoms.

Questions people ask

What should I do if the numbness has stopped?
Record when it happened and arrange prompt medical advice, especially if it was new or involved the face, arm or leg.
