Tension headache and eye pressure: what to know

Tension-type headache can create a pressing sensation across the forehead or behind the eyes. Dry eyes, an uncorrected vision problem, close screen work, bright light, sinus symptoms, and jaw or neck tension can produce a similar feeling. The sensation of pressure does not prove that pressure inside the eye is raised. A painful red eye, blurred or lost vision, halos, marked light sensitivity, or nausea needs a different level of attention.

Pause close work, look into the distance, adjust glare and lighting, and blink regularly. Rest your eyes, relax the jaw, and gently release neck and shoulder tension. If you use contact lenses, remove them if the eye feels irritated and follow your eye-care advice. Note whether symptoms follow screens, reading, poor sleep, allergies, or a missed meal. Avoid using someone else's eye drops or leftover prescription treatment.

Seek urgent eye or medical care for sudden vision loss, a red painful eye, halos around lights, severe eye pain with nausea or vomiting, a new unequal pupil, double vision, or a sudden severe headache. Arrange a GP or eye assessment if pressure persists, recurs, affects one eye, or comes with headaches that are new or worsening.

Ask whether you need an eye examination, a vision review, or assessment of neck and jaw tension. Tell the clinician which eye is affected, whether vision changes, redness, discharge, light sensitivity, contact-lens use, or screen exposure are present, and what makes the pressure better or worse.
