What should you know about TENS units for sore muscles?

Short answer

A TENS unit may provide temporary relief from sore-muscle discomfort by sending mild electrical impulses through pads on the skin, but it does not repair an injured muscle or explain why soreness developed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How it may help sore muscles

TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. The device delivers a controlled tingling through adhesive electrodes placed around, rather than directly over, the painful area. This input can change how pain signals are processed and may make movement more comfortable. It does not remove muscle fatigue, treat a tear, or replace recovery after unusual exercise.

Soreness after activity often settles with time, gentle movement, hydration, sleep, and a gradual return to loading. Pain that is sharp, worsening, associated with marked weakness, or out of proportion to the activity deserves a different assessment.

Using it thoughtfully

Read the device instructions and begin with a low setting that feels like a noticeable but comfortable tingling. Place pads on clean, intact skin near the sore muscle, keep them away from the front of the neck and broken skin, and stop if the skin burns, becomes unusually red, or the sensation is unpleasant. Do not sleep, drive, or exercise while wearing the unit unless a clinician has specifically advised this.

A physiotherapist can help identify suitable pad placement and decide whether stretching, strengthening, rest, or another approach better matches the cause of your soreness. People with an implanted electrical device, reduced sensation, pregnancy-related questions, or a skin condition should seek personalised advice before use.

When soreness needs medical attention

Arrange prompt medical assessment if soreness follows a significant blow, fall, or sudden force; if you cannot use the limb normally; or if swelling, bruising, fever, numbness, or increasing weakness appears. Seek urgent care for severe pain with a pale or cold limb, new breathing difficulty, or confusion. A TENS unit should not delay evaluation of these warning signs.

Questions to take to a clinician

Ask which problem is most likely causing the soreness, where electrodes can safely sit, how long each session should last, and whether your medicines, skin health, or any implanted device changes the advice. Also ask what improvement should prompt you to resume normal activity and what symptom means you should stop.

Questions people ask

Can a TENS unit cure sore muscles?

No. It may reduce discomfort temporarily, while the underlying muscle fatigue or injury still needs appropriate recovery and assessment.

Should TENS feel painful?

No. It should feel like a tolerable tingling; lower the intensity or stop if it hurts, burns, or irritates your skin.
