What should you know about a TENS ultrasound combo unit?

TENS uses small electrical impulses delivered through adhesive pads on the skin. People commonly use it as part of a pain-management plan because the sensation may alter how pain signals are experienced. Therapeutic ultrasound uses a treatment head and coupling gel over a targeted area; it is a separate physiotherapy modality intended to support local tissue treatment. The two functions are not interchangeable, and a combined casing does not mean both should be used at the same time.

For an Achilles or ankle complaint, for example, the underlying cause still needs assessment. A device may ease symptoms without addressing a tendon injury, fracture, infection, nerve problem, or circulation issue.

Have a physiotherapist or doctor identify the painful structure and demonstrate pad placement, ultrasound contact, intensity, treatment duration, and cleaning. Use intact skin only, follow the device instructions, and check the skin after treatment. TENS should feel noticeable but comfortable; stop if it becomes sharp, burning, or unusually irritating. Do not place pads across the front of the neck, across the chest, over broken skin, or over an area with poor sensation. Keep the ultrasound head moving as instructed rather than leaving it still.

Tell the clinician if you have an implanted electronic device, reduced sensation, a seizure disorder, pregnancy, cancer in the treatment area, or a suspected blood clot. These details can change whether either modality is appropriate.

Seek urgent care for sudden inability to walk, a new deformity, severe swelling after an injury, a cold or discoloured foot, rapidly increasing redness and warmth, or new weakness and numbness. Arrange a clinical review when pain keeps returning, prevents sleep, or does not improve with the plan you were given. Stop the device and seek advice for a burn, blister, persistent rash, dizziness, or worsening pain.

Ask which diagnosis the treatment is intended to support, whether TENS or ultrasound is the better option for your symptoms, where each pad or treatment head belongs, and what sensation should prompt you to stop.
