What should you know about a TENS massage unit?

TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. The pads deliver a controlled tingling sensation that can influence pain signalling. Although some products use the word massage, the unit does not knead muscles or diagnose an injury. A response can vary with the body area, the cause of pain, pad placement, and the programme selected.

Follow the manufacturer’s directions and have a physiotherapist demonstrate placement if you are unsure. Use clean, intact skin and a comfortable setting; the stimulation should not feel painful. Keep pads away from the front of the neck, across the chest, broken skin, and areas with very poor sensation. Check the skin after removal, keep the unit dry, and stop for burning, rash, dizziness, or worsening symptoms.

Ask for medical advice before relying on a unit for unexplained, severe, or persistent pain. Arrange prompt review for new weakness, spreading numbness, fever, major swelling, or pain after significant injury. Get urgent help for chest pain, breathing difficulty, sudden loss of strength, or loss of bladder or bowel control.
