What should you know about a TENS machine for frozen shoulder?

Short answer
A TENS machine may provide temporary support for pain from frozen shoulder, but restoring movement usually requires an individual rehabilitation plan rather than electrical stimulation alone.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Gradual, guided restoration of movement
Pain and stiffness
Frozen shoulder, also called adhesive capsulitis, involves painful restriction of shoulder movement. TENS sends mild pulses through skin pads and may reduce how strongly pain is felt for a while. It does not loosen the joint capsule or restore range of motion by itself.
Shoulder stiffness can also occur with rotator cuff problems, arthritis, or injury, and those conditions may need different care. A physiotherapist can identify comfortable pad positions and movements without forcing a painful shoulder.
A safe approach
Use TENS only on clean, intact skin and begin at a comfortable intensity. Keep pads away from the front of the neck, chest, broken skin, and areas with reduced sensation. Remove them before bathing or swimming, and stop for burning, rash, dizziness, or increased pain.
Continue the prescribed mobility programme, which may include gentle stretches, strengthening, or water-based exercise. Ask before using TENS if you have an implanted electrical device, epilepsy, reduced sensation, or pregnancy. Do not force the shoulder because the machine makes movement feel easier.
When to get checked
Arrange review if pain or stiffness is worsening, sleep is repeatedly disturbed, or movement is declining despite the plan. Seek urgent care after a major injury, for a visibly deformed shoulder, sudden marked weakness, chest pain, or a hot red joint with fever.
Questions for your clinician
Ask whether the diagnosis is confirmed, where pads can be placed, and which exercises should follow a session. Discuss whether an injection, hydrotherapy, or another option is appropriate for your stage and symptoms.

Questions people ask
Can TENS unfreeze the shoulder?
No. It may support pain control, but mobility usually needs guided rehabilitation and time.
Can I use TENS during shoulder exercises?
Only if your clinician approves the setup and the device does not distract you from safe movement or skin checks.
