Short answer

A tennis wrist sprain is an overstretched wrist ligament that can cause pain, swelling and difficulty using the hand.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Possible mechanism
Fall, twist or forceful racket movement

Protection, comfortable motion and gradual strengthening

Understanding the injury

A sprain may happen when the wrist bends suddenly, the hand absorbs a fall, or a forceful shot twists the joint. Symptoms can include wrist pain, tenderness, swelling, reduced movement and weaker gripping. Pain alone cannot show whether a ligament, tendon or bone is involved; an examination is useful, particularly after a fall or direct impact. Some wrist injuries need imaging even when the swelling seems modest.

Early care and recovery

Stop the movement that caused pain and protect the wrist from further twisting. A wrapped cold pack and elevation may help swelling during the early period. A clinician may recommend splinting for support, followed by gentle motion and progressive strengthening. Physiotherapy can help restore wrist control and guide a gradual return to serves, groundstrokes and gripping. Avoid returning to full play while ordinary movements remain painful or weak.

When to seek care

Seek prompt assessment after a fall, obvious deformity, severe swelling, a painful clicking sensation, or inability to grip or move the wrist. Urgent care is also appropriate for numbness, a pale or blue hand, or pain that is rapidly worsening. Arrange review if symptoms do not steadily improve with protection and activity reduction.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the injury needs an X-ray or other scan, how long support should be worn, and which movements are safe now. Ask for clear criteria for restarting practice and competition.

Questions people ask

Can I play tennis with a wrist sprain?

Avoid painful play early on; return should be gradual when movement, grip and sport-specific drills are comfortable.

Does every wrist sprain need a splint?

Not necessarily. The need for support depends on the examination and suspected tissue injury, so follow individual advice.
