Tender Lump Under the Skin: What to Know

A painful, warm, or red lump can be a boil, which is an infection around a hair follicle. A deeper, firm, or slowly changing lump may have a different cause. Skin lumps are often harmless, but a new growth that persists, bleeds, crusts, or changes should be examined. Basal cell carcinoma can sometimes appear as a sore or changing skin growth, although a tender lump does not by itself identify a cancer.

Notice whether the lump is superficial or deep, moves beneath the skin, has a central opening, or drains. Record when it appeared and whether fever, spreading redness, or increasing pain accompanies it.

Do not squeeze, pierce, or repeatedly massage the lump, because this can worsen inflammation or spread infection. Keep the area clean and avoid friction from tight clothing or shaving. A warm, clean compress may ease discomfort if the skin is intact. Arrange a clinical assessment if it remains, enlarges, returns, or interferes with movement; treatment depends on the examination and may include drainage or a prescribed medicine. An intralesional steroid injection is used only for selected inflammatory lesions after a clinician confirms the diagnosis.

Seek prompt medical care for rapidly spreading redness, severe or escalating pain, fever, pus with worsening swelling, red streaks, or a lump near the eye. Arrange evaluation soon for a hard fixed lump, an ulcerated or bleeding surface, or a change that does not settle. Urgent assessment is also sensible if you have reduced immunity or feel generally unwell.
