What should you know about tear trough dark circles?

The tear trough is the groove between the lower eyelid and upper cheek. A hollow in this area can catch light differently, making the under-eye region look darker even when the skin itself has not changed colour.

Darkness may be more noticeable with tiredness, facial swelling, dehydration, allergies, or changes in lighting. Thin lower-eyelid skin can make blood vessels or the underlying structures more visible. Pigment can also contribute, especially when the area has been rubbed repeatedly or has had previous irritation.

Tear trough hollows and dark circles may occur together, but they are not the same finding. A clinician can look at facial volume, skin tone, puffiness, and the way light falls across the area to distinguish shadowing from colour change.

Start by noticing whether the darkness changes through the day, after rubbing your eyes, or when you gently change the lighting. Use gentle skin care around the eyelids, avoid rubbing, and address a suspected trigger such as dryness or allergy symptoms with appropriate clinical advice.

If hollowing is the main feature, a consultation can clarify whether volume-focused treatment is appropriate. Under-eye filler is not suitable for every person: existing puffiness, skin quality, and facial anatomy all affect whether it is considered and how it is planned.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for new darkening with pain, marked swelling, redness, a rash, a change in vision, or an injury around the eye. These symptoms need evaluation because they may point to an eye or skin problem that should be treated directly.

Persistent itch, scaling, or irritation around the eyes also merits assessment. Conditions such as atopic dermatitis can affect the eyelid area and may need a plan that protects the delicate skin rather than focusing only on appearance.

Ask what appears to be causing the darkness in your case: pigment, shadowing from a hollow, visible vessels, irritation, or a combination. You can also ask whether puffiness or skin laxity changes the treatment options, what aftercare would be needed, and which symptoms after treatment would require urgent contact.
