Can you have the Tdap and flu shot together?

Tdap helps protect against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis, while the flu vaccine targets seasonal influenza. Giving them together does not make either vaccine treat an existing infection. Each injection is prepared and administered separately, often in different arms. Common short-term effects include soreness, redness or swelling where a vaccine was given, and some people feel tired or develop a mild fever. These effects usually settle without special treatment.

Bring your vaccination record and tell the clinician about previous allergic reactions, pregnancy, immune problems, current illness and medicines. Wear clothing that allows access to both upper arms. Stay for the observation period recommended by the clinic, drink fluids and use a cool cloth for local soreness. Ask which vaccine was given in each arm and when any future dose is due. An inactivated vaccine cannot cause influenza infection.

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, severe weakness or collapse after vaccination. Contact a clinician for a fever that is high or persistent, worsening arm redness and pain, or symptoms that concern you. A brief sore arm or mild fever is usually monitored at home unless your clinician gives different advice.

Ask why each vaccine is recommended, whether either should be delayed because of your health, which side effects need attention, and how the timing fits with other vaccines or planned travel.
