TCA lip peel: what to know before and after

TCA is a chemical peeling agent that removes a controlled layer of surface cells. Around the lips, the skin is thin and frequently exposed to saliva, food, movement, and friction. Burning or tingling during application can be followed by redness, tightness, flaking, crusting, and temporary colour change.

The reason for treatment should be clear. A peel may be considered for selected texture or colour concerns, but it does not diagnose or treat every lip change. Tell the clinician about cold sores, eczema, allergies, recent sun exposure, and products that irritate your lips. Follow the preparation plan exactly. Afterward, use only the recommended bland ointment or moisturiser, avoid picking peeling skin, and pause scrubs, retinoids, acids, and fragranced lip products until the barrier has recovered.

Keep the area shaded and use the advised lip sun protection. Do not judge the final appearance while redness or shedding is present. If the concern is roughness or uneven colour, ask whether a gentler approach or an option such as [Glycolic Acid](/materials/glycolic-acid/) is more suitable.

Contact the clinic promptly for increasing pain, marked swelling, spreading redness, pus, fever, extensive blistering, or difficulty eating or drinking. A new cluster of painful blisters may need assessment, especially if you have a history of cold sores. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty or swelling affecting the throat.

Ask whether the peel will touch the lip itself or only the surrounding skin, what recovery changes are expected, which products are allowed, and how cold-sore risk will be handled. Ask when you should send a photograph or return for review.
