TCA Face Peel: What to Know Before and After

Short answer

A TCA face peel removes a controlled amount of surface skin, so plan for redness, peeling and sun sensitivity afterward and use clinician-directed aftercare while the barrier repairs.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a TCA face peel does

A TCA peel applies trichloroacetic acid across a planned facial area. Its depth depends on the formulation, concentration, application and the condition of the skin. The treatment can smooth uneven texture and alter some areas of discolouration, but it is not suitable for every complexion or every concern. A consultation should distinguish acne, comedonal acne, melasma, sun spots and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation before choosing a peel.

During recovery, the skin may feel tight, warm or tender. Redness can be followed by flaking or peeling, and the fresh surface is more reactive to sunlight and irritating products. Darkening or lightening can occur, particularly when inflammation is prolonged or the skin is exposed to sunlight. A peel cannot remove the cause of an untreated skin condition.

How to prepare and care for your skin

Tell the clinician about active breakouts, rashes, cold sores, recent sun exposure, previous pigment changes, allergies and medicines. Do not use a home TCA peel or combine treatments without professional instructions. You may be asked to pause selected retinoids, exfoliating acids or other irritating products.

Afterward, wash gently as directed, keep the skin moisturised with the recommended bland product, and leave peeling skin alone. Avoid scrubs, picking, waxing, heat exposure and unapproved active ingredients until the surface has recovered. Use shade and clinician-approved sunscreen when appropriate, because ultraviolet exposure can worsen redness and pigment change. Resume products gradually and only when advised.

When to seek care

Contact the treating clinician promptly for worsening pain, marked swelling, spreading redness, pus, blisters, fever or a rash beyond the treated area. Seek urgent help if swelling affects the eyes, breathing or vision. Ask for review if the skin is not closing, becomes increasingly dark or pale, or develops persistent sensitivity after the expected healing period.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what depth is planned, which concern is being treated, whether your current acne or pigment condition should be stabilised first, and what products to stop before the peel. Clarify cleansing, moisturising, sun protection, makeup, exercise and the point at which each product can be restarted.

Questions people ask

Can I peel the skin off after a TCA face peel?

No. Let the skin shed naturally and follow the aftercare plan, because picking can prolong inflammation and increase pigment problems.

Can a TCA peel be used for melasma or dark marks?

It may be considered in selected cases, but inflammation can also worsen pigmentation, so suitability and preparation need an individual assessment.
