Targeted therapy for ovarian cancer: what to know

Some medicines interfere with signals that help cancer cells grow, divide, repair damage, or form a blood supply. A laboratory may examine tumour tissue or inherited information to see whether a relevant feature is present. A result can help your oncology team decide whether a targeted medicine is suitable; it does not predict the whole course of treatment.

Treatment may be given by mouth or through a vein, alone or alongside other cancer treatment. Possible effects depend on the medicine and can include tiredness, nausea, diarrhoea, skin changes, high blood pressure, or changes in blood counts. Your team may check blood tests, blood pressure, kidney function, and liver function during treatment.

Bring a complete list of medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Some medicines can change how targeted treatment is absorbed or processed. Take doses exactly as prescribed, and do not stop treatment or alter a dose without contacting your oncology team. Keep a record of symptoms, their timing, and any missed dose.

Ask how the medicine is taken, whether it should be taken with food, how monitoring will happen, and what to do after vomiting or a missed dose. Practical planning for fluids, rest, and transport can make treatment days easier.

Contact your cancer team promptly for a fever, chills, persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, unusual bleeding, severe rash, new breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, or a sudden severe headache. Seek emergency care for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, signs of a serious allergic reaction, or sudden weakness affecting one side of the body.
