Tampons and shock syndrome

Toxic shock syndrome is a whole-body response to toxins made by certain bacteria. It has been linked with tampon use, particularly when an internal product is used longer than directed, although it can occur in other settings too. Symptoms can include fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, muscle aches, headache, weakness, dizziness, confusion, and a widespread rash. Vaginal irritation alone is not the same as toxic shock syndrome, but a sudden combination of general symptoms deserves immediate attention.

Follow the product instructions, wash your hands before and after insertion or removal, and use the lowest absorbency that meets your flow. Change products as directed and consider pads if you prefer not to use an internal product. If you feel acutely unwell, remove the tampon, avoid inserting another one, and seek emergency assessment. Do not wait for a rash before getting help.

Call for urgent help if a sudden fever occurs with faintness, confusion, breathing difficulty, severe weakness, repeated vomiting, a spreading rash, or a sharp reduction in urination. Tell the care team about recent tampon use, wounds, procedures, or infections. Symptoms can progress quickly, including after the product has been removed.

Ask which symptoms in your case are concerning, whether you need tests or hospital observation, how to care for any wound, and which menstrual products are suitable after recovery. Clarify when you should return if fever or weakness comes back.
