Tampax and toxic shock syndrome

Toxic shock syndrome is caused by toxins produced by certain bacteria. It can worsen quickly and may occur during a period, including when a tampon is being used, although other wounds or infections can also be involved. Possible features include sudden fever, vomiting or diarrhoea, dizziness, faintness, muscle aches, confusion, a widespread rash, or skin peeling later. These symptoms have other causes too, but the combination calls for prompt assessment.

If toxic shock syndrome is possible, remove the tampon and seek urgent medical help. Tell clinicians when it was inserted and mention any recent wound, surgery, skin infection, or vaginal symptoms. Do not wait to see whether rest or fluids make the illness settle. Use pads until a clinician has assessed you, and take the product packaging if it is readily available.

Call emergency services for collapse, confusion, severe weakness, trouble breathing, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Seek urgent care for sudden fever with vomiting, diarrhoea, dizziness, rash, or faintness while using a tampon or soon after removing one. Hospital treatment may include fluids, monitoring, and antibiotics; this condition cannot be safely assessed by symptom severity alone.

Ask whether you need tests or observation, how to care for any infection source, and when menstrual products can be used again. For future periods, ask about changing tampons regularly, choosing the lowest absorbency that manages your flow, and using pads at times if that suits you.
