What should you know about tamoxifen stomach bloating?

A full or swollen abdomen may relate to gas, constipation, changes in eating, reduced activity, another medicine, or an unrelated digestive condition. Tamoxifen can also cause gastrointestinal symptoms in some people, but bloating alone cannot identify the cause. Note when it began, whether it follows meals, and whether bowel movements have changed.

Tell the team if the abdomen becomes progressively larger, pain develops, or the symptom affects eating, drinking, sleep, or daily activity. A review may include your medicines, bowel pattern, examination, and tests chosen for your symptoms.

If your oncology team agrees, eat slowly, choose smaller meals, drink fluids regularly, and take gentle walks. Record foods, bowel movements, pain, nausea, and the timing of tamoxifen. A pharmacist can check whether another medicine is contributing and advise on a suitable constipation or gas treatment.

Do not stop tamoxifen or start laxatives, herbal remedies, or anti-inflammatory medicines without checking first. Bring your symptom record to the next review, or contact the clinic sooner if the pattern is worsening.

Seek urgent care for severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a hard swollen abdomen, inability to pass stool or gas, black or bloody stool, fever with marked weakness, or fainting. Contact the oncology team promptly for persistent bloating with unexplained weight change, unusual vaginal bleeding, or pelvic pain.
