What should you know about tamoxifen citrate for men?

Tamoxifen works by attaching to estrogen receptors and changing the signals they send. For men with a hormone-sensitive breast cancer, this may help limit signals that encourage cancer cells to grow. Treatment can affect the whole body. Hot flushes, sweating, tiredness, changes in mood or sexual function, and breast tenderness are possible. A symptom can have several causes, so new or changing symptoms should be discussed with the treating team.

Use tamoxifen exactly as prescribed. If you forget a dose, follow the instructions from your clinic rather than taking extra medicine. Provide a full list of medicines, vitamins, and supplements so interactions can be checked.

Attend planned reviews and mention symptoms early. Your clinician can explain whether the medicine is being used as Hormone Therapy for Cancer or within Risk-Reducing Endocrine Therapy, and how it fits with other treatment.

Contact your care team about unusual bleeding, a new breast or nipple change, persistent leg swelling, or troublesome symptoms. Seek emergency help for sudden chest pain, breathlessness, coughing blood, fainting, or sudden weakness, numbness, or difficulty speaking.

Ask what benefit is expected, which side effects need action, whether your other medicines are compatible, and how missed doses and follow-up checks will be handled.
