Tamoxifen before and after treatment

Before treatment, your clinician considers why tamoxifen is being prescribed, your medical history, medicines, menstrual or menopausal status, and pregnancy or breastfeeding plans. Tamoxifen can be used in different cancer settings, so the reason for treatment shapes the follow-up plan.

After a course ends, its effects and the reason for continuing surveillance do not disappear on the same day. Keep appointments, report new symptoms, and ask how long contraception or other precautions are needed. Never restart leftover tablets without a new plan.

Use one consistent routine, follow the label, and ask what to do if you miss a dose. Keep a current list of medicines and supplements, including products bought without a prescription. Tell the team about visual changes, unusual bleeding, leg swelling, or persistent symptoms.

If tamoxifen is stopped, do not compensate by taking extra tablets. Confirm the follow-up schedule, prescription changes, contraception advice, and whether another endocrine treatment is appropriate for your situation.

Seek urgent help for sudden chest pain, breathlessness, coughing blood, one-sided leg swelling or pain, sudden weakness, speech trouble, or a severe new headache. Contact your care team promptly for unusual vaginal bleeding, new visual changes, or symptoms that persist after treatment changes.

Ask: What is the purpose and planned duration of tamoxifen? What should I do after a missed dose? Which medicines or supplements need checking? What contraception is suitable? When is my follow-up after stopping, and which symptoms need urgent help?
